What Even is Menstrual Equity?

Menstrual equity refers to equitable access for women and girls to menstrual and hygiene products as well as menstrual education, essential for how menstruating individuals can manage their health to reach their healthiest potential. In many areas across the globe, women and girls are not able to access hygienic and sanitary menstrual products, or any menstrual education that they need to manage their health and sanitation during the menstrual cycle. This lack of hygienic access and education promotes the notion that menstruation is a shameful bodily function, and keeps the stigma of menstruation alive within social ties, families and even individuals.

Why Is Menstrual Equity Important?

Menstruation is a natural bodily function of every girl and woman, and thus should be respected, supported, and understood. Menstrual equity ensures and encourages understanding and learning around menstruation and its stigmas, and supports menstruating girls and women through their education journey as well as the facilities for sanitation and menstrual products that are necessary for their periods and menstrual cycle. In addition, this is extremely important for one’s health and well-being.
