Understanding Puberty & Menstruation
Understanding Puberty and menstruation
Puberty and menstruation are closely linked together, as your first period, called menarche, starts during puberty, and learning about them both and how they are connected is essential to take care of yourself and your body.

01
Menarche
Menarche is the first period a menstruating individual will get, during puberty. It typically occurs around the age of 12, however it can happen a little earlier or later. If it does not occur exactly at the age of 12, don’t worry! It happens a bit later for some girls.

02
Period Irregularities
The first couple of years after menarche, periods will be irregular, and difficult to track and find patterns of, with varying cycle lengths and blood flows. However, after a few years, your periods will become more balanced out and less irregular.

03
Medical Concerns
If menarche still hasn’t occurred after the age of 15, as it could be a sign of an underlying medical condition, and thus a healthcare provider should be consulted in this case. In addition, if signs of puberty appear before the age of 8, which is the youngest age to start menstruation, visiting a healthcare provider would also be recommended.
